How to take the test

1. Apply to Newcastle City Council for a private hire driver licence.
2. Attend the knowledge and understanding session on legislation, conduct, vulnerable passengers and offences.
3. Attend safeguarding training (cancel with 3 working days' notice or pay £20).
4. Sign the declaration and provide your documents.

What the test covers

• Newcastle rules: Newcastle's driver conditions, training and requirements.
• Plying for hire: Pre-booked only, touting, ranks and matching licences.
• Safeguarding: Children, vulnerable adults, CSE, county lines and modern slavery.
• Equality & disability: Assistance dogs, mobility help and the Equality Act 2010.
• Road & passenger safety: Phones, seatbelts, child seats and safe drop-offs.
• Law & wider safety: Smoking, data protection, terrorism and suicide awareness.

What you need for your licence

• Aged over 18
• Full DVLA licence held for at least 12 months
• DVLA Group 2 medical from your GP
• Enhanced DBS within the last 12 months and the Update Service
• Proof of right to work

On the day

• Photo ID and your booking details
• Be ready to talk through legislation, conduct and caring for vulnerable passengers
• Safeguarding training is separate; cancel at least 3 working days ahead to avoid a £20 charge
• You'll sign a declaration at the end, so read it carefully
