How to take the test
- Get a written offer of work from a Birmingham licensed operator.
- Book the knowledge test with TTC (birminghamcityprivatehire@ttc-uk.com).
- Sit the multiple-choice test, navigation exercise and one-to-one interview.
- Complete disability awareness training and the driving assessment.
What the test covers
- Birmingham rules: Birmingham's licence conditions and legal information for private hire drivers.
- Plying for hire: Pre-booked only, touting, ranks and matching licences.
- Safeguarding: Children, vulnerable adults, CSE, county lines and modern slavery.
- Equality & disability: Assistance dogs, mobility help and the Equality Act 2010.
- Road & passenger safety: Phones, seatbelts, child seats and safe drop-offs.
- Law & wider safety: Smoking, data protection, terrorism and suicide awareness.
What you need for your licence
- Full driving licence held for at least 2 years
- Enhanced DBS covering the period since your 18th birthday
- Group 2 medical with the council's occupational health service
- Driving assessment to DVSA standards
- Disability awareness training (Equality Act 2010)
- Proof of right to work and two proofs of address
On the day
- Your booking confirmation from TTC and photo ID
- Revise plying for hire thoroughly: one wrong answer there means a fail
- Be ready for the navigation exercise (map reading) and a short one-to-one conversation
- Arrive early and allow time for the whole assessment
- Bring glasses if you need them for reading or maps
