How to take the test

1. Apply to Bradford Council for a private hire driver licence.
2. Complete the online modular training through Open Elms (£56), including its assessments.
3. Pass a driving standard assessment with one of the council's approved providers.
4. Repeat the modular training every three years.

What the test covers

• Bradford rules: Bradford's conditions and standards, modular training and vehicle rules.
• Plying for hire: Pre-booked only, touting, ranks and matching licences.
• Safeguarding: Children, vulnerable adults, CSE, county lines and modern slavery.
• Equality & disability: Assistance dogs, mobility help and the Equality Act 2010.
• Road & passenger safety: Phones, seatbelts, child seats and safe drop-offs.
• Law & wider safety: Smoking, data protection, terrorism and suicide awareness.

What you need for your licence

• Enhanced DBS and the DBS Update Service
• Medical certificate
• Driving standard assessment
• Right to work, DVLA check and HMRC tax check
• Child sexual exploitation training and assessment

On the day

• Set aside quiet time for the online modules; they're done at your own pace
• Have your login details for the Open Elms training platform
• Use a laptop or tablet if you can; long modules are hard on a phone
• Book your driving standard assessment with an approved provider
• Keep your certificate in case the licensing service asks for it
